A Fishing Marketplace Built in One Year
TackleTarts is a fishing tackle marketplace founded in 2019 by a team passionate about fishing. Co-founder David Oak saw a clear gap: anglers had to shop across several platforms, while many tackle retailers lacked modern technology. The team set out to create a single online marketplace that would work for both vendors and customers.
Challenges
- Validate demand with a lean MVP
- Make onboarding simple for non-technical fishing retailers
- Balance growing costs, staffing, and technology
- Build trust while scaling vendors, products, and customers
There was never a one-stop shop to buy all the different types of fishing tackle that I needed. I had to visit several platforms.

From Idea to Launch
MVP in 9 months
The founders started small and built a minimum viable product in nine months to test whether vendors and customers were interested. During that period, monthly revenue grew from £0 to £100—enough evidence to keep going.
Investment and the full marketplace
After validating demand, the team sought investment and spent about a year developing a niche marketplace. That work made it possible to onboard more vendors, expand the catalog, and prepare the business for growth.
Development and Customization
CS-Cart supplied the multi-vendor foundation, but TackleTarts built custom development pipelines around its business model. The team simplified vendor panels for easier seller onboarding, configured Mangopay and PayPal, and connected Trustpilot and Google Reviews. The lesson was clear: an off-the-shelf platform still needs thoughtful customization for a specific use case.
CS-Cart Tip
The vendor dashboard was revamped in January 2024 to make it simpler for new sellers. Mangopay is now included, PayPal has long been supported, and Google Reviews can be connected through an add-on.
Expansion and Challenges
Growth brought a new balancing act: higher costs, more staff, and greater technology needs. The team continuously optimized customer acquisition cost and average order value. Trust became equally important, so TackleTarts introduced its Guarantee and integrated external review platforms.

Key Features and Support
CS-Cart’s multi-vendor capabilities made it possible to onboard a broad range of fishing-tackle suppliers. As the marketplace matured, TackleTarts adapted vendor and product-management tools to its own requirements and began exploring a custom management platform powered by the CS-Cart API.
Achievements and Future Plans
TackleTarts launched within its first year and recorded its first sales on day one. Over the following 2–3 years, it grew to thousands of products, hundreds of vendors, and an active customer base. Next, the team plans to expand C2C selling, improve the vendor experience, and potentially offer its standalone management platform as SaaS.
Conclusion
TackleTarts became a successful specialist marketplace by combining CS-Cart’s multi-vendor capabilities with substantial customization for the fishing industry. The platform launched confidently, scaled its catalog and vendor network, and continues to evolve around better seller tools, stronger trust, and new ways to trade.
