At CS-Cart, we know that for top-tier web development agencies and system integrators, an e-commerce platform isn’t just a “product to resell.” It is the technological foundation upon which you build your highly profitable, service-oriented business.
Your clients don’t just want a store—they want complex marketplaces, robust B2B portals, and deep local integrations. To deliver your projects efficiently, your in-house PHP developers need a powerful, flexible, and future-proof core. Instead of reinventing the wheel and building from scratch, you need a framework you can trust.
That is why our development focus is shifting entirely towards enterprise readiness and developer experience. Here is a sneak peek into the major architectural updates we are rolling out soon, and how they will directly benefit your agency’s bottom line.
1. The Best of Both Worlds: Seamless Upgrades & Support for PHP 8.4 / 8.5
The PHP ecosystem is evolving rapidly. Official security support for PHP 7.4, 8.0, and 8.1 has already completely ended. Currently, CS-Cart fully supports the active PHP 8.2 and 8.3 versions.
However, we understand the reality of agency work: many of your existing clients are still running on older infrastructure. Forcing a complex server stack upgrade just to get the latest platform updates can be a massive bottleneck for both you and your clients.
What’s changing: We are taking a dual approach to our system requirements. It is important to mention that we will temporarily continue to support PHP 7.4 to ensure a smooth, uninterrupted upgrade path for our clients’ infrastructure and legacy projects. At the same time, we are actively developing full, native support for the upcoming PHP 8.4 and 8.5.
Why it matters for your agency:
- Frictionless Legacy Upgrades: You can safely update your long-term clients to the newest versions of CS-Cart without forcing them into an immediate and costly server environment overhaul.
- Security as a Selling Point for New Deals: When you pitch a complex marketplace to a large enterprise or government client, security is paramount. Guaranteeing that a new project will run on PHP 8.5—which will receive active security support until 2030—gives you a massive competitive advantage during strict security audits.
- Performance for High-Load Projects: Deploying your new builds on the latest PHP versions ensures your clients benefit from under-the-hood performance optimizations, allowing their marketplaces to handle more traffic with fewer server resources.
2. Enterprise Scalability: Native PostgreSQL Support
For years, CS-Cart has been optimized for MySQL. However, as your clients grow into the enterprise space, their IT departments often have strict infrastructural requirements. In the corporate and government sectors, PostgreSQL is often not just a preference, but a strict requirement.
What’s changing: We are currently deep into “Part II” of a massive core refactoring project to introduce native, seamless support for PostgreSQL and Postgres Pro. Our goal is to make all core CRUD operations, schema generations, and database management flawlessly database-agnostic via Doctrine DBAL. We are aiming to release a Developer Preview of this functionality later this fall.
Why it matters for your agency:
- Bigger Deals: PostgreSQL support opens the door to enterprise-level and government contracts where MySQL is a dealbreaker.
- Handling Massive Datasets: PostgreSQL is renowned for its stability and performance with highly complex queries and massive databases—perfect for the heavy B2B portals and multi-vendor marketplaces your team specializes in building.
- Flexibility: During installation, your team will soon be able to simply choose between MySQL and PostgreSQL based on the specific architecture your client requires.
Focus on Customization, We’ll Handle the Core
Our goal is simple: we want to be the ultimate PHP framework for your e-commerce projects.
By taking care of the heavy lifting—balancing legacy compatibility with the newest PHP versions, and adding enterprise-grade database support like PostgreSQL—we free up your developers’ time. You can stop worrying about core updates and focus entirely on what generates the most revenue for your business: high-margin customizations, unique UI/UX design, and complex third-party integrations.
The upcoming Developer Previews will give your tech teams a chance to touch the new architecture early. Stay tuned for the upcoming technical releases, and let’s dominate your local e-commerce market together.
