An Introduction to Shopping Addiction in the USA

Josh Wardini, Community Manager at Webmastersjury

People love shopping. People do it not only for necessities, but often because of a thrill from getting a brand new product. With the rise of online shopping and the ability to make purchases through mobile devices, it is now easier than ever to make a purchase, big or small.

Even previously brick and mortar stores are keeping up with the competition by making ecommerce stores, which again has been made even easier over recent years with the emergence of ecommerce platforms such as CS-Cart or marketplace builders like Multi-Vendor, that make it easy and hassle free for retailers to create their very own stores.

With such an abundance of shopping opportunities around, it is no wonder that so many people get addicted to making purchases, especially if they can get what they bought delivered straight to their front door. Impulse purchasing is one of the biggest problems, with 84% of shoppers admitting to making impulse purchases.

Online shopping has only made shopping addiction worse. It’s much more convenient to just sit at your laptop and look up things that you’d like to buy, and thanks to websites like Shopping.fm, you can browse hundreds of online stores simultaneously, get your hands on virtually any product and it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’re getting a good price. This is very tempting for people who shop impulsively to begin with.

Both men and women can become addicted to shopping, although usually the addition varies based on what they tend to buy. Compulsive women buyers tend to buy things such as jewellery, make-up and clothes, while research suggests that men focus more on products such as a gadgets, CDs, and tools.

The 31.7% of shoppers will frequently purchase things just because they are on sale, thinking they are getting a really good deal. Both online and offline shopping vendors offer a huge range of discounts and deals, which can sometimes be all that is needed to push someone into making that purchase.

In 2017, Americans spent $10.7 T on purchases, which is an extortionate amount of money. For each American, that was on average $101 a day, meaning that some people would spend a lot more than that. It looks like 2018 is following a similar trend, with shopping habits showing no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Shopping addiction is actually a big problem all over the world, not just in America, and although there are a lot of processes in place to prevent and stop this problem, we are still likely to buy that jacket that is on offer even if we don’t need it.
